Our Sunday rambles usually have three levels of walk, strenuous (A), moderate (B) or leisurely (C), led by Birmingham Ramblers group leaders. Join us and enjoy a great day of social walking with our friendly members.

Please note: Our walks are often on rough tracks and rights of way through fields, woodland and hills. Walkers should preferably wear walking boots and other clothing suitable for the weather. Unless otherwise described, please bring a packed lunch and refreshments for the day.

This Sunday walk has 3 levels of walk:

- A walk: 11.5 miles approx., 550m ascent, Picnic lunch

- B walk: 9 miles with 1,200 ft of climbing.

- C walk: 7 miles. 860 ft ascent.

Walk leaders:

- A walk: Andy Bates

- B walk: Kate Chester

- C walk:  Jane Collins & Alan Keener

Walk Details:

- A walk: The A walk starts at Rowsley village (shopping Centre). We cross the A6 at traffic lights and go over the river then contour around the valley climbing steadily to a road. From where we climb steeply for a short while, eventually we reach Stanton moor. We cross over Stanton moor passing Nine ladies stone circle and the Cork stone. From Stanton Moor we drop down to Birchover and continue down to cross road and climb up to Robins Hood Stride. From here we drop back down to the road and heading round the side of Birchover and Stanton Moor to head back to Rowsley. Maps Explorer 24 (White Peak)

- B walk:  Starts on the A6 in Darley Dale. From here cross the River Derwent and then climb through Clough Wood. Descend into Birchover, where there will be time for early lunch stop perhaps making use of one of the two pubs in the village. From Birchover climb up to a quarry then onto the edge of Stanton Moor, designated as scheduled ancient monument. Pass by a tower built as a monument to the 1832 Reform Act. Then come to Nine Ladies Stone Circle. From Nine Ladies Stone Circle drop down to the village of Stanton in Peak then down to the River Derwent to finish in Rowsley at the Peak Shopping Village where there may be time to visit pub, cafes, and toilets.  (The Shopping Village closes at 5.00pm.). Picnic lunch. Maps Explorer 24 (White Peak); Landranger 119 (Buxton and Matlock).

- C walk: A circular walk starting and finishing at Rowsley shopping outlet in the Peak District, Derbyshire. We head south gradually climbing to the ancient monument known as The 9 Ladies Stones where we will take a mid morning break. Most of the ascent has been done. We continue south on mainly flat moorland of Stanton Moor and the height gain gives us 360-degree views of surrounding countryside. Our route turns north at The Cork Stone through woodland heading towards Lees Road. We descend on a lane to the village of Stanton in Peak to the pub The Flying Childers. There is a slight backtrack to another lane with long views when we turn off through fields towards the river Derwent and back to Rowsley. Time permitting there is a pub next door to the car park and there are toilets, cafes in the shopping outlet.

There are a limited number of total places for the walks, which is set by the capacity of the coach. Whilst we hope that everyone will be able to be accommodated on their walk of choice, the allocation of places for each walk will have to be done on the day. No-one will be expected to walk at a higher grade than they prefer - thus, for example, if you prefer the B walk you will not be asked to join the A walk but may be asked to join the C walk. The booking form allows you to specify your preferred walk

It will only be possible to join the walk by coach, which will be picking up at 09.00 at the layby at the side of St. Chad’s Cathedral, Queensway, Birmingham B4 6EU. The coach fare will be £20 with 3 options for payment:

- Cash on the day in an envelope with your name and the date of the walk. We are unable to give change for cash payments

- Cheque on the day, made payable to COBRA, in an envelope with your name and the date of the walk.

- Bank transfer in advance of the walk

For payment by bank transfer the walk coordinator will contact you about a week in advance of the walk with bank details. For payments on the day, please put the exact fare in an envelope with your name and date of the walk on it, which will be collected on the coach - unfortunately we are unable to give change for the coach fare.

Note that you cannot pay the coach fare through our Eventcube account. Your booking for the walk will still show £0.00 but you do have to pay the £20 coach fare on or before the day of the walk.

Bookings for this walk will close at 06.00 on Monday 6 May 2024. After this, please email bhamramblersenquiries@gmail.com or contact us through our contact form at https://cobra.eventcube.io/support-hub/contact to enquire about any late availability for the walk.

If you later find that you are unable to join us it would be helpful if you let us know by sending an email to bhamramblersenquiries@gmail.com or let us know though our contact form at https://cobra.eventcube.io/support-hub/contact - this will be passed on to the walk leader and will prevent any delay to the start of the walk should the leader be waiting for you.
