Our Sunday rambles usually have three levels of walk, strenuous (A), moderate (B) or leisurely (C), led by Birmingham Ramblers group leaders. Join us and enjoy a great day of social walking with our friendly members.

Please note: Our walks are often on rough tracks and rights of way through fields, woodland and hills. Walkers should preferably wear walking boots and other clothing suitable for the weather. Unless otherwise described, please bring a packed lunch and refreshments for the day.

This Sunday walk has 3 levels of walk:

- A walk: Details of distance and ascent will be added when available

- B walk:  8 miles with 1,900 ft of climbing

- C walk: A 7.2 mile walk, undulating, 250 ft ascent over 0.7 mile, followed by 330 ft ascent over 1.9 miles; 1000 ft total ascent.

Walk leaders:

- A walk: Kate Chester

- B walk: Andy Bates

- C walk: Eva Hyde

Walk Details:

- A walk: Walk details will be added when available

- B walk: Circular from Priory Road, Malvern.  The walk starts across Priory Park, passing the Priory, then steeply up to the outskirts of the town.  Then edges gently round North Hill before climbing onto North Hill.  Down North Hill then up to Beacon Hill.  Down Beacon Hill to Wyche Cutting where there are benches, toilets, a cafe and a pub.  From Wyche Cutting up Perseverance Hill then gently down to Holy Well.  From Holy Well paths and tracks along the East side of the hill, down to Malvern Common, across Malvern Common back to the town along the street past Malvern College, finishing back in Priory Park.

- C walk: Starting by the swimming pool in Great Malvern (347 ft) we go through part of the town and by the railway line for 0.6 mile before arriving at the open area of Malvern Common. We continue southwards next to a dismantled railway line to the lowest point (221 ft, 1.8 miles) and then across fields, with good views of the Malvern Hills. At about 2.9 miles (264 ft) we begin a steady ascent, first by a field, then a wooded track to some houses, until we cross the A449 at the side of Black Hill (3.6 miles, 510 ft). This is the steepest part of the route. From here, we proceed more gently upwards on a wooded road at the side of the Malvern Hills to the Holy Well, (4.4 miles, 673 ft) where Malvern spring water was bottled. The waters were reputed to have beneficial qualities, due to their purity, leading to Malvern becoming a spa.  We continue along a wooded path, at the side of Perseverance Hill, with views of the town and fields below, reaching Upper Wyche and the Wyche Inn pub, listed in the good beer guide since 2011. This is the highest point of the walk at 846 ft and 5.3 miles. We descend slightly (60 ft over 0.3 mile) along a B road and then continue on paths by the side of the Malvern Hills, regaining some of our height then going down by the hills and through the Rose Bank gardens to Great Malvern Priory. This was once a Benedictine monastery and has a large collection of 15th century stained glass and medieval floor and wall tiles. A path through the Priory Park takes us back to the coach.

There are a limited number of total places for the walks, which is set by the capacity of the coach. Whilst we hope that everyone will be able to be accommodated on their walk of choice, the allocation of places for each walk will have to be done on the day. No-one will be expected to walk at a higher grade than they prefer - thus, for example, if you prefer the B walk you will not be asked to join the A walk but may be asked to join the C walk. The booking form allows you to specify your preferred walk

It will only be possible to join the walk by coach, which will be picking up at 09.00 at the layby at the side of St. Chad’s Cathedral, Queensway, Birmingham B4 6EU. The coach fare will be £20 with 3 options for payment:

- Cash on the day in an envelope with your name and the date of the walk. We are unable to give change for cash payments

- Cheque on the day, made payable to COBRA, in an envelope with your name and the date of the walk.

- Bank transfer in advance of the walk

For payment by bank transfer the walk coordinator will contact you about a week in advance of the walk with bank details. For payments on the day, please put the exact fare in an envelope with your name and date of the walk on it, which will be collected on the coach - unfortunately we are unable to give change for the coach fare.

Note that you cannot pay the coach fare through our Eventcube account. Your booking for the walk will still show £0.00 but you do have to pay the £20 coach fare on or before the day of the walk.

Bookings for this walk will close at 06.00 on Monday 4 March 2024. After this, please email bhamramblersenquiries@gmail.com or contact us through our contact form at https://cobra.eventcube.io/support/contact to enquire about any late availability for the walk.

If you later find that you are unable to join us it would be helpful if you let us know by sending an email to bhamramblersenquiries@gmail.com or let us know though our contact form at https://cobra.eventcube.io/support/contact - this will be passed on to the walk leader and will prevent any delay to the start of the walk should the leader be waiting for you.
